Kandy is documenting one of the city’s landmark features, the Kandy Lake, and spent half the day Just walking and gazing at this enchanting man-made body of water, absorbing the hustle and bustle of daily life around it.

Lovingly nestled in a valley, protected by the hills, dominated by the tree covered lake with the mighty Mahaweli gushing in the background, the city of Kandy is still a focal point of Sri Lankan culture. It was the capital of the Kandyan Kingdom and the center of governance for the last generation of the country’s kings. Enroute you will visit the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage.

The main attraction is clearly to observe the bathing elephants from the tall river bank as it allows visitors to observe the herd interacting socially, bathing and playing. Next, visit the Dalada Valigawa hundreds of devotees of white who throng to venerate the sacred Tooth Relic of The Buddha. It was rescued from the cremation flames in 543 BC and brought to Sri Lanka in the 4th Century. Continue to visit the Kandyan Arts and Crafts Centre to find craftsmen fashioning brass, silver and lacquer work.

The next stop is at the Royal Botanical Gardens. See its magnificent Orchid House and the grove of splendid trees, all planted by eminent world figures. Return to Colombo by evening. Tour includes entrance fees to the Botanical Gardens, Dalada Maligawa and Pinnawela.
